A museum of art and history, of science and technique, of popular tradition and human adventure, the Maritime museum is a gathering point for all those who share an enthusiasm for our maritime heritage. Created on the basis of a collection given in 1748 to King Louis XV, the Maritime museum retraces over three centuries of naval construction. Here you will find magnificent period models of warships since the end of the 17th century, of the last great sail and steam vessels, of merchant ships and fishing boats, and of exploration vessels. Also on display are majestic figureheads, marine paintings, lighthouse optics and rare navigational instruments, all evocative of the maritime adventure. All lovers of the sea come together at the Maritime museum, drawn by its regular cultural events (the Salon de la Marine, exhibitions of paintings, history, ethnology, archaeology, and top- level modelmaking, conferences and seminars, etc).
